Where Can Corns Develop?

Patients who have a corn on their foot are often aware of the pain and discomfort they can cause. They can develop as a result of excess friction on different areas of the foot. Soft corns are found between the toes, which can make it painful to walk. They are a small, hardened area of skin that stays moist between the toes. Additionally, corns can form on the bottom of the foot, or on the outside of the pinky toe. Many people who develop corns wear shoes that are too tight, and do not fit correctly. Mild relief can be found when a protective pad is worn over the corn, and this may help to diminish a portion of the friction. If you have corns on your feet, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can recommend an appropriate treatment method for you.

If you have any concerns regarding your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists of CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition characterized by nerve damage to the nerves of the feet. It is a common condition among people with diabetes, affecting approximately half of all diabetics. Peripheral neuropathy could cause a variety of symptoms in your lower limbs, including burning, tingling, or pins and needles sensations in your feet, numbness, weakness, and pain. A loss of sensation or increased sensitivity to touch are also common. All of these can lead to changes in the way that you walk, affect your balance, lead to a loss of muscle tone in the lower limbs, and cause swelling in the feet. If you have peripheral neuropathy, practicing good foot care will be especially important for keeping your feet healthy and maintaining your mobility and independence. It is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist, who can help you take care of your feet.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Cypress, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Lowering Your Chances of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a fungal infection of the nail. This type of infection can be unsightly and uncomfortable, causing thickened, brittle, crumbly, and discolored toenails. Over time, the nails may begin to separate from the nail bed, leading to pain or discomfort while wearing shoes. Fungal nail infections can be highly contagious, so it is important to take measures to prevent infection. Maintain good foot hygiene by washing your feet daily and drying them thoroughly. Wear socks and shoes made with breathable, moisture-wicking materials. When using public facilities like swimming pools and locker rooms, where fungi tend to thrive, wear shoes to prevent exposure. You should also avoid sharing personal items, like towels or nail clippers, with other people. To learn more about preventing fungal nail infections, please consult with a podiatrist.

For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

What Should I Look For in a Shoe?

A good shoe is hard to find, but knowing the shape of your feet can help you get the right fit. Place your foot on a piece of paper on the floor and then trace the outline. Bring this outline with you while shopping for shoes. When you find a shoe that you like, place it down over the tracing and see how well it matches up with the outline of your foot. The right shoe will match the shape of the outline. It is also wise to have your feet sized at the shoe store, to ensure that you are trying on and buying the correct sized shoe. Good shoes will also have at least some of the following features: fasteners (like velcro or laces) that support your foot and keep it in place, a roomy toe area, good arch support, a heel that is 1.5 inches or shorter, a snug back to keep your foot from sliding, and a smooth lining with no rough seams that can irritate your foot. To learn more about how to find the right shoe for you, please consult with a podiatrist.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

How to Tell if You Have a Broken Toe

Broken toes can occur due to sports injuries, accidents, or even wearing improper footwear. Although it may not always be easy to detect, a broken toe should be treated properly to ensure correct healing and avoid any future complications. A broken toe may give you discomfort ranging from mild tenderness, to numbness, to very intense pain, and limited range of motion. There may be swelling at the site, and possibly even weakness and spasms in the muscles connected to the broken toe. Blood from the broken bone and fluids released into the tissues under the skin may cause partial or entire bruising of the toe and surrounding area. The toe may be twisted, bent out of its normal shape, or the bone may pierce through the skin. If you have had recent trauma to one of your toes and are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can diagnose a broken toe and help it heal properly.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Cypress, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
