Rehab for a Broken Ankle

A broken or fractured ankle happens when one or more bones in the ankle joint break. The ankle joint comprises the tibia or shinbone, the fibula or calf bone, and the talus between these two bones. A broken ankle is painful. When one breaks their ankle, they might hear a snapping or grinding noise, and experience swelling, tenderness, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight and walking. If a bone is sticking out of the skin and is bleeding, it should be considered an emergency and requires immediate medical care. An examination and imaging test will be performed to determine the type of fracture. It will be essential to stay off your foot. Depending on the severity of the break, you will be directed to wear a walking boot, cast, or splint, and possibly to use crutches. Surgery might be necessary and physical therapy might be prescribed. Broken ankle recovery time is typically six to 12 weeks. If you think you have broken your ankle, visit a podiatrist for a correct diagnosis and treatment.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.

Foot Pain When Walking

There are a variety of reasons your feet may hurt while walking. If any of the several small bones in the feet become injured or misaligned, or the cushioning around them deteriorates, pain can be significant. Some of the more common foot maladies that can affect feet when walking are plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and turf toe. Plantar fasciitis causes a stabbing pain in the heel or bottom of the foot which is worse first thing in the morning. Metatarsalgia causes a sharp, aching pain in the ball of the foot just behind the toes and may also cause numbness or tingling in the toes. It can feel like there is an object, like a pebble in the shoe. Turf toe is a sprain of the big toe. Pain is worse when the toe is hyperextended, as it often is in a push-off position. It causes pain and stiffness in the toe, and perhaps swelling and bruising. Since there are other conditions that mimic these ailments, it is important to see a podiatrist for a proper evaluation and diagnosis. This type of doctor can help with all foot and ankle-related pain.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Causes of Burning Foot Pain

If your feet feel like they are burning up, it may be a sign that you have experienced nerve damage in the foot or leg, an injury, or a compression of the nerves. Burning feet, also known as Grierson-Gopalan Syndrome, is a condition that consists of damage to the small nerve fibers of the foot. Although the cause of this condition is not clear, it is often found in people who have diabetes, vitamin B deficiency, or rheumatoid arthritis. Among other possible causes of burning feet are peripheral artery disease, peripheral neuropathy, and Morton’s neuroma. Other factors that can result in burning foot syndrome include kidney or thyroid problems and abnormal biomechanics of the foot. Common symptoms of burning foot syndrome are a pain in the soles of the feet, a feeling of pins and needles, and numbness. If you regularly experience such symptoms, please contact a podiatrist for an exam and a diagnosis, followed by suggested treatment options.

Cleaning Foot Wounds

Wounds on the feet can develop for any number of different reasons. Commonly, if an individual is walking barefoot and steps on an irregular, sharp, or small object, this may create some kind of wound. Relatedly, foot wounds are common to some diabetics because the loss of feeling in the feet among diabetics makes it more difficult to even notice wounds when they develop. Although wound care is particular to each patient, several general rules of thumb might be useful. Generally, it might be a good idea to clean the wound before dressing it. If a medical professional says that it is permissible to do so, clean the wound with soap and water to fight against infections. It is also important to remember that the wound can also sometimes be dried with a towel so that it is not wet. Having a wet wound that makes the bandage wet might have a host of complications. If you are prone to developing foot wounds (perhaps because you suffer from diabetes or because you frequently walk around barefoot), contact a podiatrist today to see what you can do to ward off foot wounds.

Wound care is an important part in dealing with diabetes. If you have diabetes and a foot wound or would like more information about wound care for diabetics, consult with one of our podiatrists from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Wound Care?

Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.

What Is the Importance of Wound Care?

While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.

How to Care for Wounds

The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.
